The Organization

African Queer Youth Initiative (AQYI) is made up of a group of motivated, dedicated, and resourceful young people across Africa. From southern to northern Africa, eastern to western Africa, including the African Islands, all working together towards the same goal to amplify the voices of LGBT+ youths in Africa.

Since its founding, AQYI has put young queer Africans at the forefront of advocacy efforts to advance LGBT+ equality and elevate their voices on issues that directly affect them, thereby
eliminating all forms of tokenism. AQYI continues to sponsor and support African LGBT+
youths' participation at critical spaces where issues that affect them are being debated and helping to grow and sustain the empowerment of young and emerging LGBT+ youths/activists. 

Position Overview

The Executive Coordinator reports to the AQYI Board and has overall operational responsibility for the successful leadership and management of the organization. This position requires a youth friendly and highly effective leader with passion and expertise in effective movement building. The position also requires solid interpersonal skills for building relationships and trust with community members, board and staff, donors, CSOs, partners, stakeholders, and positively impacting the lives of African LGBT+ youth. The ideal candidate will also have competence and knowledge in human rights with an understanding of the issues that intersects with the lives of African queer youths. 

AQYI is looking for its next Executive Coordinator to help lead and strengthen the organization into its next chapter of growth. Key responsibilities include but are not limited to organizational development by way of creating and strengthening systems and structures to help staff and the Board meet the goals of the membership and community, solid fundraising, managing human resources, and general administration.

Key Responsibilities

Provide organizational leadership for the AQYI.
Analyze and troubleshoot internal and external issues that affect the organization with the board and team members.
Develop and implement creative and effective teamwork spirit between the Board and team members.
Lead team members, board and general membership on processes to develop and implement necessary strategic plans for the AQYI.
Set organizational priorities by developing relevant work schedule and monitor progress towards goals and objectives.

Professional Experience 

Five years senior management or leadership experience in an NGO with experience hiring, managing, and supervising staff.
Knowledge of leadership and management principles for NGOs and social justice movement.
Academic credentials relevant for the Executive coordinator role (Bachelor’s degree or higher), although candidates with substantial relevant experience with no university degree will also be considered. 
Prior experience in human resources management.
Possesses solid knowledge for effectively managing a dynamic regional youth led organization, including relevant legislation guiding NGOs in Africa.
Has experience dealing and engaging with a governance board (even if in a voluntary role).
Experience with public speaking and serving as an organization spokesperson. 
Solid experience working with the LGBT+ community in Africa, policy makers, donors, international organisations, mainstream youth groups, and other broader SRHR organizations.
Fluency in speaking, reading, and writing in English and in French would be considered a strong asset and highly desirable.

Operational Management

Lead and oversee the efficient day-to-day operations of AQYI.
Design and implement innovative strategies to achieve organisational goals and objectives that contribute to the long-term sustainability and success of the AQYI.
Design and implement strategies to sustain communication and interaction between members.
Ensure that the operation of the AQYI meets the expectations of its stakeholders, funders, members, staff, partners, and Board.

Financial Management

Develop and implement effective and robust fundraising strategies, including securing and maintain diverse source of funding. 
Cultivate new relationships and seek new funding for the AQYI while maintaining and strengthening relationships with current donors and partners.
Provide oversight and accountability for AQYI finances together with the relevant staff members by ensuring accurate documentation, completion of reports, accurate accounting and timely audits.
Ensure the organization has strong policies and procedures to ensure the effective management of financial resources.
Ensure that financial performance is continually monitored and evaluated, and prompt corrective action taken, where required.
Administer AQYI funds according to the approved budget and monitor monthly cash flow of the organisation and any adverse situation.

Performance Management

Lead in the creation and implementation of systems for tracking progress, and monitoring and improving the effectiveness, efficiency, quality, and impact of AQYI activities.
Ensure that team members are effectively led by organizations core principles and values.
Ensure that staff members understand the big picture and their individual contributions to same, including how their performance will be appraised.
Lead on all relevant human resources activities within the organization.
Determine staffing requirements in consultation with the Board for effective organizational management and programme delivery.
Oversee the development and implementation of human resources policies, procedures, and practices.
Recruit and invest in the professional development, skills development, and sustainability of staff.
Serve as a coach and mentor to staff as appropriate, to improve their effectiveness and performance.
Ensure that staff members are appropriately disciplined, including termination when necessary.

AQYI is looking for enthusiasm and interest in working with a diverse and audacious group of young people in an innovative team structure. AQYI seeks a dynamic person to fill the position of Program Officer. The selected candidate will oversee the design, implementation, monitoring, and documentation of a leadership project targeting young LBTQ women in West Africa. They will also serve as a liaison between AQYI and external partners as part of this project.

Job Description:

Manage the LBTQ women’s leadership project.
Design and implement a fellowship program for LBTQ women in West Africa.
Shortlist and provide technical support to fellows of the leadership program.
Supervise the work of fellows and report back on successes.
Manage project and program budgeting and monitoring process.
Work closely with team members on fund proposal development, overall fundraising, and other organizational development activities.
Build and sustain relationships within the LGBTIQ movement and with external stakeholders.
Work with the communication associate to develop online contents, produce reports, blogs and contribute to the AQYI newsletter.
Coordinate consultants, junior staff, interns, and volunteers who are part of this project.
Perform other assigned duties.


Required Experience and Qualifications: 

You have a strong interest in human rights and LGBTIQ issues in Africa.
You have a bachelor’s degree or Higher National Diploma in a relevant field or equivalent experience with at least 3 years of engagement and experience with the LGBTIQ community.
You have a specific understanding of feminist theories and a concrete grasp on issues facing LBTQ women in Africa.
You have experience designing and implementing projects and managing teams.
You have excellent oral and written communication skills in French and English (Mandatory).
You have strong experience with MS Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
You have experience with public speaking.
Strong interpersonal skills and cultural experience working with young people from diverse backgrounds.
You can work well under pressure while juggling multiple tasks with competing deadlines.
You have good experience with fundraising and grant proposal development and reporting.
You are self-motivated and can work well independently with little or no supervision as well as function as a member of a team.
You can travel both locally and internationally when needed.

About Us:

AQYI currently seeks a Research and Documentation Officer who will coordinate and lead on research projects for the AQYI. The successful officer will also be expected to lead on documentation within the organization and contribute to writing and publication. This includes providing the research input required to implement, develop, and evaluate AQYI’s programs. AQYI seeks a dynamic individual who is obsessed with collecting, synthesizing, and interpreting data, and documenting findings in easy-to-understand reports. To succeed in this role, the officer will need to have an in-depth understanding of LGBT+ issues in Africa and be committed to the goals and objectives of the AQYI. This is a full-time remote position, and the officer can work from anywhere in Africa with a reliable internet connection. 

Job Description:

Lead and provide technical support to the AQYI in the design and implementation of research activities.
Lead and support the AQYI in analyzing, synthesizing, and presenting findings from research data.
Lead and support in the documentation of research findings through different communication channels like the web, social media, articles, and reports.
Design, write, and edit reports for internal and external audiences.
Lead in community engagement and documenting findings and contacts within the continent and globally.
Lead in the promotion and fostering of result documentation, inter-team learning activities and sharing, and use of lessons learned and best practices to create positive results.

Required Experience and Qualifications: 

Degree in public health, communications, public relations, public policy, international relations or any relevant area.
Three to five years of relevant experience.
Fluency in French and English (reading, writing and speaking); experience with translation of technical documents.
At least three-years of demonstrated work experience in research related positions or projects and/or programs in Africa.
Ability to think creatively and strategically to identify the most effective methods for communicating information and promoting use of priority research and programming.
Experience with research design, implementation, and data analysis.
Experience with report writing and project documentation.
Excellent writing and editing skills with strong attention to detail.

Desired Experience & Qualifications:

Strong inter-cultural and interpersonal skills.
Experience writing for multiple audiences, especially in translating technical knowledge into a common language.
Familiarity with the use of social media sites as platforms for disseminating information and increasing interest.
Experience working with young people from diverse backgrounds and appreciation for innovative work arrangements.
Self-starter, committed team player with little or no supervision and with a strong connection in the African LGBT+ community.
