About Us: African Queer Youth Initiative (AQYI) is made up of a group of motivated, dedicated, and resourceful young people across Africa. From southern to northern Africa, eastern to western Africa, including the African Islands, all working together towards the same goal to amplify the voices of LGBT+ youths in Africa. AQYI currently seeks a Strategic Communication Consultant who will develop and implement, in partnership with the AQYI team, a strategic communication plan. The successful candidate for this role will have experience in crafting comprehensive messaging and effective branding, and how to use these tools for effective communication in a dynamic and bilingual organization like the AQYI. The candidate will also be expected to develop a communication implementation plan that considers the internal needs of the organization and its communication objectives. A candidate that is very social media savvy, have expertise and experience on facilitating active engagement, and a deep understanding of communication as an effective advocacy tool will thrive in this role. This role is also expected to help the AQYI become more established and successful as a bilingual organization, catering to the needs of both its anglophone and francophone members and constituents. This is a full-time position with a one-year contract. Importantly, the Strategic communication consultant guides the Membership and communication Associate in maximizing African Queer Youth Initiative’s network to communicate its message and work effectively, both internally and externally. During the one-year period, the role will primarily focus on: Developing AQYI’s communications strategy for the next five years and an implementation plan. Coordinating the production of a number of key resources to support advocacy, give more visibility to AQYI work and objectives; and Developing a strategy for coordinating AQYI’s regular external communications and content. Job description: Lead the development and implementation of a strategic plan to address AQYI communication needs as a bilingual organization and to ensure active engagement internally and externally. Review and evaluate target audience based on the objective of AQYI’s work and desired outcomes. Lead and support the communications and membership associate in organizing and developing a messaging and branding strategy. Provide AQYI with advice and recommendations regarding short and or long-term communication strategies. Assess ways in which AQYI’s website, social media channels and related communication platforms can be best leveraged for meeting communication needs targeting out major audience. Development of new communication activities aimed at expanding AQYI’s digital reach and engagement. Leading on the monitoring and assessment of AQYI’s external communications, including advocacy campaigns, global newsletters and website content. Identify how to best coordinate and streamline the various communications and advocacy efforts of AQYI. Ability to work well and fast virtually. Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, English, Communications, Advertising and Journalism, or other relevant field. Preferably with a masters’ degree. Exceptional verbal communication skills, including abilities in presentation and facilitation. Expert knowledge of social media management. Experience with understanding and implementing marketing strategies. Experience with metrics and reporting. Ability to work effectively in virtual setting, independently, and as a team member. Exceptional writing and editing skills. Must be able to speak fluent in both French and English (reading, speaking, and writing). Strong ability to lead and encourage collaboration and engagement.
